Airport X-Ray found my toy
« on: June 08, 2010, 11:46:15 PM »
I was recently traveling back through the Charlotte airport with a Meiki mini and a Tenga fliphole black in my carry-on roller.  They sent my bag through a second time because they saw something they didn't like, and then it had to be hand searched  ???.  After searching for the mystery item, he pulled out the fliphole and asked me what it was... I told him it was and adult item.  I think he thought I was being a smart ass. First he bomb swabbed it, then he took it back to the front of the line and put it in a change bowl and sent it through the x-ray again and then handed it back for me to pack.  Both him and the female x-ray tech both glared at me with a look of disgust.  It was actually kind of funny to watch my sex toy going down the x-ray belt in front of all those people who were oblivious to what it was  ;D.  I was just glad it wasn't my Meiki mini!  HAAA!

Neither got flagged on my outbound flight in another airport, and my mini didn't get flagged on either leg on a previous trip.  I don't know what it was that freaked them out about the black that time through.

what race are you? Would be helpful to know. If I were you and that happened to me I'd give them a smile before boarding the plane. lol

They probably just flagged it because it doesn't look like the normal shapes they see going through the x-ray machine. I'm sure they've seen their fair share of dildos and vibrators going through but those have a recognizable shape. A Tenga does look like some kind of strange contraption so they have to be on the safe side and investigate. I've been pulled aside several times, frisked, had my backpack hand searched (with nothing more than books, a small pillow, and a CD player inside), and the bomb swab thing done on my backpack. I don't really look "suspicious" (white, standard height, light hair, light eyes). My round trip ticket was payed with a credit card. I dress business casual when flying. IOW, there really isn't anything about me that would scream profiling but there you have it.

Our country became extremely paranoid after 9/11. The Patriot Act, wire tapping without a warrant, very tight security at airports. And a bunch of other measures. 9/11 woke us up, much in the same way that the attack on Pearl Harbor did. Indeed 9/11 is this generation's Pearl Harbor.

They glared at you because of the double standard of misandry. Female sex toy: perfectly acceptable, she's "empowered", etc. Male sex toy: disgusting, he's a pervert, etc. But, don't worry about it. You will always find people with closed minds and who are judgmental.

a black canister of unknown capabilities sounds like a recipe for destruction to me. the security did the right thing.

as for the dirty looks... it is kinky for a female to carry her own sex toys since its widely known and accepted, but for a male to carry a sex toy, it generally not known (it is more of a special item that only those who seek it will know about it).

lesson learned tho, I won't be carrying any of that sort through the airport now. coincidentally, i'm going back to Hong Kong soon, it is nice to know about this. thanks for the story.  :P

I think the reason that sex toys for men are misunderstood is because men can easily get themselves off, for us it's like flipping a switch and we're ready to rumble, whereas women have a hard time at it, getting aroused and orgasming. At least that's my understanding.

Exactly, but then again almost everyone that works there is probably bored and just check shit out anyways...or if they wanted to they could really embarrass you if they wanted, although I wouldn't be embarrassed, it's the same as walking into the drug store and picking up some condoms and KY....the immature nonsexual people working that laugh are just jealous...if they do laugh I just say can you please tell me where I can find the whipped cream hahaha

I think it was a fluke, perhaps a random scan or hypersensitive x-ray tech.  I'm an average, well dressed white guy.  As a personal test I have traveled at least 5 more times with both a Meiki mini and the flip black both in my carry-on roller and my backpack and haven't had a problem, including some of the higher security airports.  To tell you the truth, the item is exotic enough that if you just told them it was a "toy" as in a child's toy they would not know the difference.  I think that is the benefit of the flip, it is very discreet unlike the Meiki, which looks like a real pussy (have the security guy whip that out of your bag and see the looks you get).  I put the black in a ziplock labeled "toy - no liquids present" and the Meiki in a small ziplock labeled the same put in a flip open sunglasses case marked the same.  That way I do not have to explain what it is if I get randomly searched and the ziplock (especially on the mini) obscures them somewhat..  Personally I don't really care what they think anyway because I travel all the time on business and I like to have some fun on my off time.  I bought them to enjoy and I plan to.  Minor inconvenience.

By the way, the Meiki mini line is AWESOME for the price.
