Newsletter seems to automatically unsubscribe
« on: March 04, 2010, 10:46:05 PM »
This has happened twice now, but when I've opened up the newsletter, I end up getting notification e-mails about having unsubscribed from the it when I was nowhere close to even hitting the link for that. The first time this came up, I went to my TD account and double-checked the newsletter tick, but now that it's happened a second time, I'm not certain if it's actually unsubscribing me when I open up the newsletter or if it's just automatically sending me false notifications when opened.

I have not rechecked the newsletter tick in my TD account, so if you guys want to send out the newsletter again, I can check to see if it comes through, showing that the notification e-mails are just false positives. If it doesn't come through again, then it's unsubscribing me upon opening the newsletter.

Thanks for the information. Is is possible to tell us how you are checking your email?(which browser or email client).

We've been looking into it and the newsletter sending program we use seems to have a minor bug with picture links but we haven't found anything yet with the un-subscribing link.

Does your program automatically unsubscribe simply by someone clicking on the link, or is there a confirmation prompt? If the former, it's likely an antivirus/antispyware program automatically checking out the link when the email is opened, to ensure it doesn't lead to malware.

I used Firefox and Hotmail. My antivirus, Trend Micro, does have a spam e-mail filter, and it's on, but I don't know if that's what's affecting it. Based on the description, I wouldn't assume so though.

Actually I was more wondering about Toy Demon's program. If it's a one-click unsubscribe (ie. no confirmation prompt) then antivirus checkers that scan email and check links for malware could very well be responsible for the unsubscriptions.

Well, I just tried it on my own newsletter. And yes, it's a one-click unsubscribe, there's no confirmation prompt.

Many antivirus/antispyware applications will actually load links from emails or search results to see if they lead to malware downloads, before allowing you to click on them. So, that's possibly what's happening here.

You are correct in that it is one click unsubscribe without the need to reconfirm. We thought it would be the easiest way for our customer not to jump through hoops to unsubscribe. We don't want our customer to feel like they are being spammed, we haven't seen too many unsubscribe so it may be for a small number of antivirus doing this. We'll have to see if we will change that system.

Issue has been fixed. Un-subscribing is now a 2 step process.
