A colleague of mine brought up the topic today about why porn is legal while prostitution isn't..after all..arn't they the same exact thing?? getting paid to perform a sex act.

That is interesting, because I did come across that issue a while back. Some porn stars claimed that they're working in a "safe" environment from STDs (I guess they have a stud filter), while some also claim that they are on a constant fear that they will contract a disease.

What I think makes it legal is that porn stars actually go through some paperwork before doing something like that whereas prostitutes do it "willingly" therefore if the shit does hit the fan, porn stars have something to run to whereas prostitutes don't.

Kinda the same reason why Alcohol is Legal, but not Drunkeness. And why cigs are legal, but not weed. Its a legal issue. If it was on a morale basis, your right, porn would be illegal.

I did a little search online for this issue and one reason that I particularly agree with is that the Government can tax pornography (made by companies usually) while prostitution cannot be taxed.

I was just about to say that after reading the other posts. If the government can't tax it or regulate the buisness then it's illegal.

It is almost like saying: Why is junior gravure idols legal and yet Pedophilia is not?
Believe it or not, the Japanese government is actually looking into this!!

Pedophilia is a psychological disorder in which an adult experiences a sexual preference for prepubescent children.

Most of the junior gravure idols are at ages lower than 16. Some if not most of them are put into positions where they're dressed or pose in sexually suggestive manners. Of course, you can argue that it varies by the reader's perspective, but really, what's a 12 year-old doing in a bikini lying on a bed. Questionable actions? I think so, but like most people had argued that this "alternative outlet" is better than having men actually kidnapping little girls and raping/molesting them.

Same could be applied to pornography versus prostitution, it is an alternative outlet. It may be illegal if viewed by someone who gives a damn, but when it comes down to pornography, no one can say no (unless you're the holiest of all priest and the cleanest of all monks).
