PS4 or XBone
« on: November 25, 2013, 03:30:58 PM »
Now that the 2 new consoles are all out, which one did you guys get? Why?

Personally, I pre-ordered the PS4 because I didn't like XBone's system with all those anti-consumer drm. Even though they have changed it all, I still didn't care too much for it.

However, towards the end, I canceled my PS4 preorder and ended up with nothing. I looked at the games on both and didn't find any games that I wanted to play at all! Instead, I am getting Zelda on the 3ds and Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U.

What did you guys ended up getting and what games did you get?

My latest one was Wii U....Not too sure if I will ever get another console again. The last three consoles I've gotten was to play 1 or 2 games..and after that I barely uses it...I use my ps3 now for blue ray and netflix....sad as it is... I don't see myself with a ps4 or xbox1 :-\

I broke down and bought an Xbox One. Now that I've had actual hands-on time with it, I have to say all the criticism that's been thrown at it is very unfair.

If all you want to do is just play games, and not much else, then get a PS4. But if you want a powerful all-in-one media center, then get an Xbox One.

Went with ps4 and have yet to find a single problem. For the console closest to having pc grade hardware, it has no issues overheating and there is no loading screen, lag, or power/cd-handling issues whatsoever. Had it on running games for over 12 hours straight and not one issue popped up. Impressed and relieved in all of those aspects.

The controller is much more ergonomic without it even being obvious. It was to the point that I tried it out and it didn't even feel like I was using anything new. Only till I plugged in my ps3 and played a game or two on there did I notice that the dual shock was ridiculously better in shape and placement of the joysticks. Only downside is that the controller burns through power quite quick, at least in comparison.

Only issue with the system itself is that sony has not fully integrated their media and game library with the newer system. When they do, it will truly be one hell of a system. Till then, I'll sort of be stuck with BF4, AC4 and some free games on it. Overall, not completely amazing in the options of day 1 games (for XBone and PS4 both), but based on the simple fact that the blasted thing isn't melting discs, or me having to send it for repair, it is still impressive for a release non-the-less.

With the rat poison of companies like EA in the gaming industry, it is ridiculously rare to find anything living up to what the manufacturer/developer/publisher claims.

So is the PS4 worth getting? If you like playing games, I can't see a negative. PS4 has been noted to be much more developer friendly in the new gen consoles, and are more game centric. So it will be up to you decide from there.

One other point, if you have, or ever will have a ps vita. Sony is planning to do a lot more in bridging the systems together. So it will be like the Wii U but you can take it wherever you go, except not just for ps2/classics, but for ps4 games as well.

I have been reading on gaming forums that Forza actually has microtransactions? There's microtransactions in a $60 game??!?!? WTF!

You can pay like $70 to get game tokens so you can unlock a ferrari or something in Forza. I don't have a problem with iOS games that are free or $0.99 to have in app purchase, but for a $60 game to have these?!?! I can't say I like what the gaming future is going towards....

Honestly, I believe the free to play phase we are going through is the most at fault. In all truth, it is correct that it can lead a company to a good amount of profit in a smaller amount of time; however, it occurs at the expense of two things. These are the longevity and the quality of the game and its franchise.

A lot of the free to play systems of gaming going around is either bottom rung trash that boasts nothing aside from something mildly interesting with no context and no continuous updates. Most of the time, these games have very little initial funding, and because they are purely micro-transaction, also little progression from the developers. That or a game that was originally purchasable but failed and became bargain bin free to play to stretch what little life it has left with micro-transactions. If a game does have an interesting concept, if free to play, it usually ends up milking the consumers for as much as possible even if it leads it to an early demise. Thus the initial pay to win concepts.

In most cases, they fail miserably, only in rare occasions you get something like World of Tanks that stay free to play and still do well, with the developer actually caring about the company.

So instead, we now have the new format. Pay a lot up front AND micro-transactions. Love and embrace it, because it will just get worse from here on out. Heck EA becoming more and more powerful as a company is testament to that. One other minor point is that it may give a company more in a shorter period of time, but not so much in longer terms. This is why companies are now scrapping the idea of longer run games for installments and revamps every 6 months to 1.5 years, depending on the genre.

Oh and guys, sorry, my rant is now over.

Hey guys,
I just want to brighten up the mood on this topic.

Have you seen the latest episodes of South Park Season 17 Episode 7 Black Friday  ? and It's sequel Episode 8 A Song of Ass and Fire  ?

It was really funny how they associated black friday with game of thrones and the war between PS4 and Xboxone

If you haven't seen it check it out here: http://www.watchcartoononline.com/south-park-season-17-episode-7-black-friday
I couldn't stop laughing after 04:00 when the fat woman said :"they can kiss my fat vagina"

Those two episodes are hilarious!

"Winter is coming"      so happy holidays to you all.

My wife bought me a Vita on Black Friday.  I primarily game on handhelds due to my living situation so this was a great gift.  Since I also have a 3DS, I am fine with a small Vita game library.

Eventually I plan to buy a PS4 (currently own a launch PS3), how soon depends on the functionality of remote play.  I can't play games on my TV too much these days so it isn't a high priority as of now.  I am not looking for my game console to function as a home media center so I probably won't ever buy the Xbox.

The vita is quite nice. I own both that and the 3ds. The 3ds and the 3d features gives most people, especially myself, headaches to the point of migraines. It looks decent, but the 3d effect is at most an inch in perspective view and just pops characters out of the background. 99% of the time, the blasted 3d I leave off to save my eyes and my sanity. Holding the 3ds is a sheer chore for me as I consistently get cramps if I play it for a period of time and it is a strain on eyes and positioning to maneuver the two panel screens when switching from lying down position, sitting, etc. All in all, it is not as comfortable and just has more extra features than really needed. Their main selling point is their lower price and more games and franchises. The new Fire emblem was great and have heard good things for the new zelda. (Edit, nvm, I think that is for the Wii U.)

The vita was entirely another story. The back is also a touch pad, and the grips and controls are quite comfortable. Not sure I enjoy some of the control schemes for some games due to the position of the right joystick and the main 4 buttons OXtrianglesquare; however, I have never had an issue being on it for more than 3 hours, as with the 3ds.

What it comes down to is the games for the handhelds. Nintendo had the overall market covered, even in Japan, primarily due to the price, not the functionality or quality of the system. It is my hope that with the ps4 compatibility and crossplay, that more developers turn their eyes to ps vita gaming. Also, since you just got the vita, playstation plus is still worth it as I got 5 games for the vita as well as all the ps3 games over the last half year. Every single game they gave for free on the vita I have loved, Gravity Rush, Uncharted, Zero Escape: Virtue's last reward. You also have all of the old psp games to pick and choose from. Of other titles, Persona 4: golden is quite worth it, and I have heard good things of Memories of Celcetta. The Assassin's creed, killzone and uncharted titles also have positive ratings.

For any interested in the handhelds, I hope this comment helps in some way.

Thanks for the detailed review, crux.  I just purchased a 3DSXL myself , and you're right -- the 3D effect is a bit annoying after an extended period of time (though fine for me in short spurts).  I've only had it for a short time but I see myself really dialing the 3D down for most of the time.  I got it mostly cuz I find gaming on a tablet rather awkward and I have an old DS Lite handheld that served me well.  I searched for an older firmware 3DSXL (no higher than 4.5.0-10U) so that I can accomodate the gateway/R4i hack card , which will supposedly have support for homebrew stuff.

I wanted to get the PS Vita also (esp. the older version with the OLED screen) but I just don't have the cash for it; it was either the Vita or the 3DSXL, and the latter has considerably more games for it at my local GameStop than the Vita.

I don't think I'll be investing into any more video game products for a while though; I'd rather use my limited funds towards increasing my small onahole collection.   ;D

I also never play with the 3D feature.  When I first buy a game I turn it on just to see the effect, and then turn it all the way down to actually play.

I have so many games I haven't even touched yet that getting a new system would be a bit daunting for me at this point. I did get a shiny new laptop pretty recently and it plays some pretty good titles rather well, so I guess that's where it's at for me. I wish the early adopters luck though, those first run consoles and their failure rates are worrisome.

Honestly the only reason I got the Xbone is for Halo. I just put a new graphics card in my PC and I've been playing it a lot more, haven't turned my Xbox on in days.
