Worried about the "toy cleaner" after reading this article...
« on: December 04, 2009, 09:52:49 PM »
I noticed the product they sell on TD " Berman ToyCleaner " has the description -
"Fights bacteria with Triclosan, an anti-bacterial ingredient."

I was surprised to run into this article when researching what local drugstore alternatives I could buy:
http://www.greendaily.com/2008/01/16/just-say-no-to-triclosan/

Is it just me or does this article scare the crap out of you when you realize your manhood may be coming into contact with it?
For those too lazy to click, here is an excerpt:

"Exposure to triclosan can damage the organs and disrupt hormones. Outside of our own bodies, triclosan reacts with chlorine in tap water waste to create chloroform, a toxic chemical, that eventually can end up in waterways."

Any opinions? ugg :(

The article's heart is in the right place, but it doesn't necessarily apply to this case.

Yes, persistent use of "antibacterial" soaps and cleaners when they aren't necessary (like routine handwashing) isn't terribly wise. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't use those types of products when they *are* necessary. Moreover, You're not putting the toy cleaner directly onto your skin (nor are you using as much as you'd, say, use with a bar of antibacterial soap).

If you're worried, here's my recommendations:
1) Consider not using the toy cleaner every time. Just once in a while. Use HOT water and any other soap approved for the toy for routine washing.
2) Use a light spray of the cleaner when you do.
3) Before you use the toy after it's had the cleaner on it, give it a quick rinse with water to wash traces of the cleaner off.

I was thinking toycleaners are used to spray/ wipe your toys down to dis-infect them... and after that..you'd leave it to air dry right?? then after some time exposed to air..these chemicals wouldn't do much to your skin. IMO

That article is bad pseudo-science: another one of those anti-vaccine/anti-medicine.

We might as well say that we should stop breathing oxygen because it's in carbon monoxide: a lethal gas in prolonged exposure to humans (and a contributor in the green house effect).

In fact, most city drinking water (that uses chlorine to kill bacteria) contains MORE chloroform.

:)

Toy cleaner is safe  ;D- just let it air dry first. I mean, Lysol can kill you too but you'd at least let it sit for a while before rinsing, right?

As a heads up:
Quote
Triclosan is used in many common household products, including Clearasil Daily Face Wash, Dentyl mouthwash, Dawn, the Colgate Total range, Crest Cavity Protection, Softsoap, Dial, Right Guard deodorant, Sensodyne Total Care, Old Spice, Mentadent, and Bath and Body works hand sanitizers.

Update on this matter, we found something new that may blow all toy cleaners away. It's not available yet publicly but we got a sample  ;D

Right now we are doing test on it with different toys on our site to make sure it's compatible with these materials. 2010 brings lots of cool stuff and we have our hands full 2 weeks into the new year.
