Goodbye, Microsoft.
« on: May 21, 2013, 05:13:10 PM »
Did anyone watch the Xbox reveal? I was very disappointed. They spent almost the entire show focusing on TV streaming bullshit, and very little on games. It's a glorified DVR! And now there's news that the console will force you install games to the hard drive and lock the game to your account! And it requires the new Kinect to be plugged in at all times.

All my fears were confirmed, goodbye Microsoft, and hello PlayStation 4!

Unfortunately, there's actually people out there excited with a 'seamless tv integeration' experience.
But damn, that thing is *ugly* :P
Top recommendations 1: Julia + (intense, realistic sensations at a not-so-intense price) 2: First Sexual Experience (personal favorite)
3: Wet Meiki SHIN (revolutionary soft but gripping material). Honorable Mention: Tomax 2D Wavy Ripple (great for transition hand-> toy)

Ya, I read about how it will be connected to the internet once every 24 hours. Also you basically can't lend a game to your friend. They say there's still a used game market but there's no details.

I was never a huge xbox fan, but this sure doesn't make me want to get one. Only time will tell, but I am definitely not interested.

They've confirmed it. You can play a game on a friend's Xbox One, but you'll have to sign into your account to do so, if your friend wants to keep the game and play it on their account they'll have to pay for it.

I've been waiting for this day to come. I just knew it would happen eventually. Microsoft will always be Microsoft. As encrypted as their software is it was only a matter of time before they did it to their games. Computer piracy is one thing but people that play console games aren't into pirating stuff we're proud of our collections we like bragging about them so what's the point of all this? I got it that it's an attack at the game resale market. They're getting so greedy that people only buy games once and they don't get a cut off the resale and trades people do. This is a way to stop that with the Commubox720. I heard these are being made in North Korea now. Now Microsoft can force you to buy new games and keep a watchful eye on what you do.

I'd be surprised to see how many people will still support this antigamer console. I hate playing PC games just because of all the DRM stuff, now microsoft is trying to bring that to game consoles. I hope Sony is smarter than that.

I completely agree with Capn Awesome.

I think it's ridiculous what MS is doing. I have stated many times on this forum, the problem isn't with piracy, it's giving me what I think is fair.

I will admit that when I was in college, I pirated a few things here and there and that was because 1. i was a poor college student and 2. i was in college so i had plenty of time. Now, i don't even bother jailbreaking my iphone, I pay for netflix.....which I dont' even know how much it's charging me because it's simply too convenient even if I don't watch anything in a month.

I have no problem if they want to do all of that drm to prevent ppl from pirating and such. So it does prevent people from pirating, then that means they are making more money, shouldn't the price of each game be lower??

I can honestly say that if games were at like 19.99, or 29.99, I would have bought so many games that look interesting to me, but at $60 and possibly higher in this next gen, I pretty much stopped buying. I have bought probably 2 full price games in the last couple of years, one being Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the Wii U, and Zelda Skyward Sword for the Wii. On my PS3 were all 9.99 and 14.99 games that I bought without thinking because they were under $20 and I got the ps3 a little later.

Anyway, everytime I talk about videogames I rant about how digital pricing is fucked up and I still think the same way. I don't think I will be getting a XBone simply because I already don't have time to play that much videogames, I sure as hell won't give that money and time to a system that I do not believe in.

Also I feel kinda bad for the younger generation, when I was younger, I buy street fighter, my friend buys mortal kombat, and we would trade games so we can play different games, or go to my friend's house and borrow final fantasy from him because he beat it already....it won't be like that anymore.

Phil Harrison has confirmed that the Xbox One will have to connect to the internet every 24 hours to verify content ownership.

Nothing, not even Halo 5, will make me buy that fucking thing! I've boxed up my 360 and I'm going to sell it to get money for the PS4.

I just feel totally betrayed by Microsoft, they have basically told gamers to fuck off. Well, we're going to fuck off, Microsoft, and I'll laugh as I watch you burn!

Being in finance, I have to mull over directly or at least hear through friends, colleagues, etc about just about any major company in the US.  So Sony and MS have certainly come across my eyeballs a bunch the last two weeks.

Look at the companies divisions and you'll see games is at best a break even but usually a losing proposition. Sony's home group is mired in so much shit, they are being pressured by key investors to sell the few properties they have that generate reliable capital. (mainly movies and entertainment divisions (games doesn't tilt the needle here) MS is simply bull headed and will use their monolithic PC advantage and cash to fund this Xbox endeavor until its brutally obvious to everyone they need to stop. (happened at least twice so far. MS chose to refocus the thing on the new hotness... home media.)

MS... hell as an investor I don't give a rip about you as a gamer. In fact, I prefer you gone. The production values demanded by the public now are reaching near Hollywood levels yet only the blockbusters generate enough money to keep this nightmare afloat. New releases are discounted within a month or two and the used market kills what little profitability that can be found.

The ONLY part of gamers MS wants is:  DLC

Talk about a cash cow. Set up a few server farms. Sell stuff you created during the development cycle for 1/3 or 1/2 of the games price?  Oh and keep that gravy train rolling for months. And sales on DLC?  Um, no thank you. So if you ever bought DLC...congrats, you funded your own execution.

MS and Sony want in peoples living rooms. They see the ridiculous loads of cash Apple  generates from Itunes and Amazon from TV and Streaming. What would you rather sell?  A season of say Mad Men or Breaking Bad at $20-30 that cost you a dollar or two to move or a video game at $50 which cost you millions and is no sure fire thing?

What the Wii, Connect, Move, latest consoles, Xbox live streaming and tv options, etc etc should have told you is... you, as a gamer, are a dinosaur.  We love mammals now. Sheep most especially.  We might have been homies when that big ugly black Xbox came out but we're just not feeling ya anymore. We want in your family's living room. You as a gamer don't really need to be there honestly. Your mom though? She's looking mighty fine with her extra income and less anal retentive spending habits. ( "Oh look. I can get the whole season of "The Good Wife" without having to go anywhere. *giggles*)

Do I feel your pain? I suppose though as a wide eyed gamer I saw this coming long ago.  We gamers long ago stop being profitable enough to be wooed and chased like we were.  The Xbox ONE (or whatever the hell it is) isn't for YOU.  In an irony, its evolved, thanks to your help and cash, to be  for just about everyone BUT you.   :o

Future is about media on demand fellas. The sheep-le out there are cash cows ready for slaughter. And Sony and MS really have no choice but to cater to them as gamers just aren't enough to survive off (let alone thrive) of anymore.

Ps. And can we please DEAR GOD get off the Sony love BS. Need I remind you of the PSP GO that made your UMDs useless?  Or that they would LOVE to resell you any and all the games YOUVE ALREADY BOUGHT to your through their lovely storefront? A network, which got hacked and then shutdown for weeks!  And that the PS3 was the most closed looped, developer ass-ripping hardware ever to be made. Two Words: ROOT KITS!  Oh thats only tip of the iceberg stuff friends. I can go all night!  :o

Hell, at least MS has the decency to tell you up front  you're going to get it in the rear after which they're going to move on.  Sony holds cultish press conferences showing hardware that never comes into being running demos that aren't ever playable. (Im tired of seeing "movie like games - that are indeed JUST MOVIES)

STEAM is the only island safe in the storm and Im not sure how long that will last. They work with developers. They support games AND gamers. Its certainly rife with buggery and other BS but they are still way better than their competition.

Unless youre into BDSM... Sony's got ya covered there.  :P :P :P

*Yeah yeah. You guys will jump all over me as a raving loon. So be it. There's more truth than rant here fellas. Take heed for your own personal health and mental wellness. Enjoy the gamer life while you can. We are soon to be extinct fellas. Smoke if ya got 'em I say.  :P  *

Well the thing is Microsoft can put out whatever they like and try to force the change in purchasing behavior by cutting out purchase options but they're also taking the risks of adaptation. Is their current following big enough to have enough people adapt to their new game selling format and still make a profit? Movies are one thing but they're not as expensive as games which are 40-60 dollars. When people buy or rent a movie they don't spend nearly as much as they would purchasing or renting a game. This is something Netflix found out the hardway when they started increasing their prices for movie services. There is a limit as to how much a buyer will spend on media entertainment. With games people put more emphasis into their costs. The gaming market doesn't really like spending that much on games unless it's guaranteed to be good. Even as DLC there's a limit to how much a person would be willing to put down knowing that they don't physically receive anything. The costs of games is what sent the used game market rocketing. Used systems and games are the biggest competition these companies have. They lose out every time someone buys a used game or console instead of a new one. This new console from Microsoft is just a way for them to try to control your buying behavior. There's hardly any freedom with the system.  X-Flop have just shot themselves in the foot.

I preorded a PS4.......cheaper, better specs, no DRM, no online authentication required.

I understand where MS is going, but as a gamer......I don't care for it. In the end for a "GAME" system, it's about the games. I am just so sick and tired of shooters and sports games on the MS front that I never bothered with them, with such anti-customer strategy for their next system, I will stay away once again.

I understand their move as a business, I loathe their move as a gamer.

Once you come to terms with the fact "games" are a loss leader to simply get the media console into your household, you realize your importance or lack threreof in the grand scheme.

Yes, people don't spend as much on media as they do a game but then media is a sunk cost in a lot of cases (TV shows will be made regardless, Hollywood churns out movies regardless, etc etc)

Games? Other than the burgeoning independent market are huge money sinks with risky profitability on the back end. Hence the trends of:

Hawking Sports Games Hard Core: build off a single engine for 3-5 years

Infinite Sequels:  Why risk cash on a new property?  Keep cranking out CODs, Uncharteds, Ratchet & Clanks, Final Fantasy 97 X-5 , etc etc.

Character branding:  Notice how Mario and co are in tons of games and tons of sports variations?  Golf, tennis, Soccer, Baseball.  Brand a game "Mario" and if they like it they try another one just cause hes on the cover.

Personally Im holding off until I know for sure they'll be enough GAMING value in whatever machine I buy to make it worth it.

Ive been burned way too much on launch software and worse launch HARDWARE.  Im letting them work out the kinks and pricing this time around.
